Hi, I’m Theo Broomhall

I’m a writer, editor and filmmaker from Perth, Western Australia, living and creating on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Screen Production, and an enduring fascination with stories, people and the beauty of everyday life.

From the moment I could talk, I’ve been a chatter-box. Talking to my toys, playing out the back, in the park, making up countless magical worlds to escape into. I’ve also always been a book-worm. Through my teenage years I consumed any book that I could get my hands on - to the point where one summer holidays my parents banned me from reading, begging me to go outside - which went hand in hand with my love for writing.

At fifteen, if you’d asked me what I wanted to do as an adult, I would have said without a moment of hesitation, “an author”. That answer hasn’t changed so much as it has expanded. As I’ve grown older, I have discovered that stories can exist far beyond the page. They exist in your neighbour who waters his roses to Sinatra at 11am on a Sunday morning, in the girl who works at your local cafe covered in tattoos all with their own meanings, in the elderly couple you pass every day on your evening jog. Stories are everywhere, in the smallest seemingly insignificant details of our everyday lives. It's these stories that fascinate and inspire me.

The more I have grown as both a person and a writer, the more I've realised that my fascination with people naturally extends beyond the individual. I’m deeply interested in the things that shape us: the expectations placed upon us, the identities we try on and grow into, the memories we carry, and the strange, bittersweet ways nostalgia lingers on throughout our lives. I'm curious about the things we take for granted as 'normal', and what happens when we stop to question them. I'm drawn to the spaces where the personal and collective overlap, where the story of one person can reveal something much larger about the world around them.

I’m always searching for new stories, new collaborators and new ways to make things. Whether it’s film, writing, or whatever else might strike my fancy, I strive to continue creating work that is curious, honest, occasionally peculiar, and unmistakably human.
